Anal Pap Test and HPV Screening

TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE AND STABILITY

Room temperature 5 weeks for Pap test

Room temperature 30 days for HPV screening

REJECTION CRITERIA

Specimens collected using alternative vials and or swabs, insufficient volumes, lubricant or blood, fecal matter, expired media

TRANSPORT CONTAINER / SPECIMEN

Rectal specimen collected using a Dacron swab in a ThinPrep, Liquid Based Pap Vial, 20ml

TURNAROUND TIME

2 – 5 days from receipt at the lab

COLLECTION

  1. Insert the moistened tip of the Dacron swab approximately 2 to 3 inches into the anus.
  2. With firm pressure, rotate the swab against the rectal walls for 15 to 30 seconds.
  3. Carefully withdraw the swab and immediately place into the ThinPrep Pap Vial.
  4. Cap the vial tightly, label with two patient identifiers.
